Taktsang Monastery – The Tiger’s Nest

  • Towards the north of Paro town, more than 3000m above the sea level stands the majestic Taktsang Monastery, popularly known as The Tiger’s Nest. From the nearest road, the hike towards Taktsang takes around 2-3 hours for one way and is definitely one of the icons of the Himalayas and is a must visit when in Bhutan.
  • The discovery of Taktsang dates back to the 8th century when Guru Rinpoche flew to the monastery on the back of a Tigress in the form of Dorje Drolo (manifestation of Guru Rinpoche) and meditated there for 3 months and performed many miraculous works and subdued evil demons residing within it. The cave has been considered as a sacred site ever since and many famous saints have travelled to meditate in it.
  • Taktsang has a very polished architecture built in a very Bhutanese manner and its complex is with a white body and golden roof. The interior has gold-plated dome and flickering lights that are illuminating golden idols. There are 9 shrines inside the Taktsang Monastery of which, one is dedicated to the local protective deity. Separate butter lamp offering room is also designated if you prefer to light a butter lamp.
  • Currently, Taktsang Monastery is being visited by hundreds of travelers throughout the day and the monastery opens at 8 am in the morning till 4 pm in the evening. There are few monks who live nearby the monastery, a place which is dedicated for the monk residence. Those monks carry out day to day rituals and ceremonial practices in the monastery.
  • Tourist can enjoy the unique combination of spiritual hike and sightseeing along the dense forest that leads to Taktsang. When you reach up, be amazed with this amazing work of art and the way it has been situated. Tourists also have the opportunity to take great photographs in front and around Taktsang and these pictures definitely will be enough to make families and friends back home jealous.
